Taking supplements is not a neutral act. Every molecule added to a stack interacts with the others, with your food and sometimes with a treatment. The issue is rarely the isolated dose, it is the combination.
Why risk climbs so fast
The number of possible pairs grows quadratically. Four molecules give you 6 pairs. Eight give you 28. Twelve give you 66. Nobody tracks 66 combinations mentally, and no single purpose app does it for you since it only sees part of your routine.

The most frequent interactions
1. Mineral competition at absorption
- Zinc and copper: prolonged high dose zinc can lower copper. The ratio matters more than the dose.
- Iron and calcium: taken together, calcium clearly reduces non heme iron absorption.
- Iron and coffee or tea: polyphenols and tannins limit absorption. A two hour gap is often enough.
- Magnesium and high dose zinc: same transporter, same competition. Split morning and evening.
2. Additive effects on blood fluidity
High dose omega 3, vitamin E, concentrated garlic, ginkgo and curcumin all push platelet aggregation in the same direction. Stacked together the effect is no longer trivial, especially before surgery.
3. Absorption and metabolism interference
- St John's wort: a strong enzyme inducer, it lowers the efficacy of many medications, including oral contraceptives.
- Grapefruit juice: a CYP3A4 inhibitor, it can instead raise concentrations.
- Vitamin D without K2 or magnesium: real world efficacy depends on cofactors.
Timing, the underrated variable
Many interactions are not absolute incompatibilities but timing problems. Shifting two intakes by three hours often removes the competition entirely. You still need the exact list and to know what to shift.

Write down the whole stack
Molecule, dose, form, intake time. Including what you would not call a supplement: coffee, herbal tea, protein powder.

Group by mechanism
Minerals on one side, fat soluble vitamins on another, active plants apart. Conflicts almost always sit inside a single group.

Split what competes
Two blocks are usually enough: morning and evening. Three if you take a lot of minerals.

Re-check on every change
A new molecule does not add one interaction, it adds as many as there are lines already in your stack.
