Twenty-five euros for 90 capsules of 125 mg. When the supplement budget sits around fifty euros a month, that is not one more line, it is a trade-off against everything else.
So I do not take it every day. I take it during exam weeks, with a 500 mg load to start, then one or two capsules in the morning, and two eggs in the evening for the choline. It is a protocol built around a price, not around a trial design, and this article exists to say what that costs in rigour.
What I observe is clear. Less fatigue in the morning, more fluidity, and above all endurance: the ability to hold for hours without quality collapsing. On fatigue I put it level with creatine. On endurance, above it.
What the trials measured, and in whom
The one closest to my situation covers 75 healthy adolescents, randomly assigned to 250 mg, 500 mg or placebo, for 28 days. Attention improves, psychomotor speed too. A useful detail: the weight-adjusted dose predicted accuracy, signal detectability and reduced impulsivity, which argues for the higher dose over the lower one.
The second covers 100 adults aged 50 to 85 with memory complaints, on 500 mg per day for 12 weeks. Episodic memory and a composite memory score improve significantly. With a precision that matters: both results are presented as secondary outcomes, which is not the same thing as a primary endpoint met.
«Cognitive endurance» is not what was measured
Here is where my experience and the literature stop talking about the same thing. The trials measure attention and speed on computerised tests lasting a few minutes, after four weeks or three months of daily intake. They photograph a level.
What I describe is a slope: the rate at which quality degrades across a day, and from one day to the next through a week without rest. No trial cited here measures that, and I found none that does.
That is not a reason to withdraw the observation, it is a reason to name it correctly. I have seen it across several exam sessions, with and without, which puts it above an impression and below a result. And it concerns exactly the kind of thing a laboratory protocol cannot catch, because nobody puts a control group through five days of exams.
The dose tested, and the one the budget allows
My protocol leaves the evaluated frame on two axes at once, and that is worth writing plainly. The maintenance dose, one or two 125 mg capsules, falls below the lowest 250 mg ever tested. And intermittent use, a few days around exams, resembles none of the trial schedules, all of them continuous over 28 days to 12 weeks.
The arithmetic explains why. At 25 euros for 90 capsules, each capsule costs 28 cents.

Thirty-three euros a month for one molecule, on a budget of fifty, does not need long deliberation. The trial dose is not out of reach, it is simply incompatible with the rest of a stack. That is an economic constraint dressed up as a pharmacological choice, and it is true for a lot of people.
The egg trick, and what it actually covers
My idea was to top up with food, and on paper it holds. One large hard-boiled egg provides 147 mg of choline, close to 300 mg for two, against the adequate intake of 400 mg per day set by EFSA for adults. Two eggs therefore cover three quarters of a nutritional need, for a few tens of cents.
Except citicoline is not choline. Its full name is cytidine diphosphate choline, and it is a molecule in two halves.
The egg fills the choline column and leaves the other empty. That is excellent for not running short of choline, which is a legitimate goal in itself, and it is not the same intervention as the trials'. In other words my cost strategy is sound on nutrition and incomplete on the molecule.
Why it does not feel like caffeine
The difference in feel comes from a difference in category. Caffeine is a stimulant: it blocks a fatigue signal, with a peak and a comedown. Citicoline is a precursor, meaning the raw material for membrane phosphatidylcholine and for acetylcholine.
So there is no jolt, which fits trials that measure after 28 days rather than after 30 minutes. In me, caffeine alone delivers energy and sinks the quality of what I produce, to the point that I only take it with L-theanine. Citicoline produces nothing comparable in either direction.
What this article does not say
- That citicoline improves cognitive endurance. Nobody has measured it. The trials measure attention and speed on short tests.
- That my protocol is the right one. It is below the tested dose and discontinuous, two departures I accept for budget reasons, not scientific ones.
- That the available results are solid. Seventy-five adolescents, one hundred adults over fifty, the same brand on both sides, and secondary outcomes in one case.
- That eggs replace citicoline. They replace choline, which is half the subject.

What Helix does
This case adds a dimension supplement lists ignore entirely: the cost per dose actually evaluated. A molecule whose tested dose eats two thirds of a monthly budget is not comparable to one that costs three euros, even when both carry the same level of evidence.
So the engine crosses what you take, at what dose, and what that dose is worth against the trials'. When you are below, it says so, instead of validating a line because it carries the right name.
